FLOWER POUNDING
“Gingko Fish.” I started with a contour line drawing of a fish, the cross cultural symbol of good luck, happiness, and abundance. I then looked for botanicals to complement the shape and texture of the fish. The gingko leaf was the perfect fit. The leaf itself is the symbol for longevity, hope, resilience, and peace. I also used morning glory leaves, dill, and other flower petals. I pounded these objects by placing them on prepared for dying fabric (pdf), taped down with masking tape, then laid on a hard surface and hammered with great force. The tape is pulled off leaving a botanical impression waiting for detailed painting.
